Overview

This website is operated by Shhh Consulting Inc. ("Dept 81," "we," "us"). By visiting our site and/or buying from us, you agree to the terms below. Please read them — the section on how our made-to-order model works is important and differs from most online stores.

What you're buying

Dept 81 sells made-to-order goods produced in Japan. When you place an order, you are not buying an item that already exists — you are commissioning one to be made for you, and agreeing to the production and shipping timeline shown on the product page and in your order confirmation. By ordering, you confirm you understand and accept that timeline.

Orders, cancellation, and refunds

Because items are made to order, cancellation and refund rights depend on whether production has started. Full details are in our [Returns & Refunds policy], which forms part of these terms. In short: you may cancel for a full refund any time before your order goes into production; once production begins, orders can't be cancelled for change of mind, but defective, damaged, or incorrect items are always made right at our cost. Customers in the European Union have an additional statutory 14-day cancellation right as described in that policy.

Pricing and availability

All prices are in [USD] unless stated. We may change prices, products, and order windows at any time before you place an order. We reserve the right to limit quantities or decline an order. In the rare event a maker is unable to fulfill a confirmed order, we will notify you and issue a full refund — our liability in that case is limited to refunding what you paid.

Accuracy of listings

We describe handmade goods as accurately as we can. Natural variation in grain, finish, color, and dimensions is inherent to handmade craft and is not a defect. Product images are representative; your piece will be similar but not identical, because it's individually made.

Your account and conduct

You agree to provide accurate order information and not to use our site or products for any unlawful purpose. You're responsible for complying with your local laws on importing and possessing the goods you order, including any local restrictions on items such as knives.

Intellectual property

The content on this site — text, photography, the Dept 81 name and logo — is ours or used with permission, and may not be copied or reused without written consent.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Dept 81 is not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the site or products. Our total liability for any order is limited to the amount you paid for that order. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your statutory consumer rights.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.

Changes

We may update these terms; the version posted here at the time of your order applies to that order.
